Frequently Asked Questions

Is Workday an HRIS or an HCM system?

Workday is usually described as a cloud HCM suite. It includes core HRIS functions such as employee records and organization management, and adds talent, recruiting, payroll, time tracking, learning and analytics. Because it covers more than record keeping, HCM is the more accurate label, although many organizations still refer to Workday as their HRIS.

What is a business process in Workday?

A business process is a configurable workflow for a transaction such as hiring, a job change or a time off request. Administrators define its steps, approvals, notifications and condition rules. Changes to business processes affect how work moves through the organization, so most teams test them in a sandbox tenant before moving them to production.

Does Workday Payroll work in every country?

No. Workday offers its own payroll for a limited set of countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and France. For other countries, organizations typically use Workday Cloud Connect for third party payroll or a partner payroll provider. Check Workday's current coverage list before planning a global payroll design.

How do other systems integrate with Workday?

Workday supports integrations through web services (SOAP and REST APIs), Reports as a Service (RaaS), Enterprise Interface Builder, Workday Studio and packaged connectors. The right method depends on data volume, direction and frequency. Time clocks, benefits carriers and third party payroll providers are among the most common systems connected to Workday.
